Abstract : Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious public health problem worldwide with major social, mental and physical health short- and long-term consequences. IPV is "any behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual, or psychological harm". IPV is not restricted to any certain sub-group of the population but occurs across all educational levels, social classes, racial and religious groups, and countries. The estimated prevalence of IPV is 33% in the Arab countries. Few studies have been conducted on the prevalence and predictors of IPV in Saudi Arabia. To our knowledge, there are no published studies on IPV in Taif city. Aim: To estimate the prevalence of IPV among female patients, age 15 to 60 years old, attended primary health care centers in Taif city; to measure the association between the socio-demographic characteristics and IPV experience and to assess the behavior of reporting among those exposed to IPV. Methods: A cross-sectional study using self-administered questionnaire was conducted among Saudi female patients who attended primary health care centers in Taif city, Saudi Arabia, during the period from18th January 2015 until 19th February 2015. Results: Five hundreds patients were invited and 497 participants completed the study with a response rate of 99.4%. The estimated prevalence of IPV during last year was 11.9%. Predictors associated with IPV included divorced wives, divorced wives' parent as well as widowed husbands' parents, her husband’s exposure to violence in childhood and husbands' addiction to alcohol or drugs. Conclusion: IPV in the past year is prevalent in Taif city, Saudi Arabia and researches are needed across Saudi Arabia to further quantify its magnitude and describe its occurrence and to identify its determinants.
