Abstract
:
This Thesis studies the phenomenon of plural in Arabic and English. The study aims in particular to study the phonological and morphological levels of plural in both languages. It adopts the contrastive method with a view to identifying the similarities and differences between the two languages, in order to achieve the desired goal of study, which is to overcome the expected mistakes of learners of both languages. The Thesis indicated that the differences between the two groups are more evident in both languages. However, this study found a good number of similarities in plural forms in both. This study includes three chapters. The first chapter presents an overview of the dual and the plural in the two languages. As for the second chapter, it covers phonetic changes in dual and plural in Arabic and English . The third chapter, shows the similarities and differences in dual and plural between Arabic and English. In conclusion there are some research results and recommendations such as: 1- Arabic is distinguished by dual and Feminine Regular Plural ,they are do not exist in English (modern English). 2- Both languages share existence of regular and irregular plurals patterns .The regular plurals in two languages are formed by suffixes in nouns. 3- The irregular plural in Arabic is called Broken Plural. It is formed by shifting within the word stem. In English, The irregular plural is unpredictable as in the case of regular plural. Unlike the English irregular plurals which do not possess any steady patterns, the Arabic broken plural has numerous strict and disciplined rules to form this plural type. 4- Many irregular plurals in modern English were formed due to historical reasons through stages of English language, and because influence of other languages on English language. While the broken plural forms in Arabic language were formed in their present form. Among the most important recommendations of this study: 1-Researchers in Arabic should aim in to discuss the basic differences and the difficulties that students may face when they learn Arabic language such as dual and broken plural . 2- The researcher hopes that the researchers well discuss subjects not discussed in this thesis especially related to syntax and semantic levels.
