Abstract : Background: Diabetes mellitus is on the top causes of death in the world. This disease should be managed to prevent complications such as retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy. Hyperglycemia associated with diabetes causes an increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS). At normal blood glucose levels, the body neutralizes the ROS with enzymes like SOD3, and GST. NOX is considered a major source of ROS. The increase in the rates of ROS associated with oxidative stress may change these enzymes' levels. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the levels of SOD3, GST, and NOX and its relationship with insulin resistance in type 2 patients with or without nephropathy. Methods: A case-control study involving 74 adults from both genders classified into three groups: type 2 diabetics with nephropathy (n = 20), type 2 diabetics without nephropathy (n = 29), and non-diabetics as control group (n=25). Fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, and insulin levels, as well as NOX, GST, and SOD3 levels, were measured for all samples. Results: NOX levels in the T2D and DN groups were significantly lower than in the control group (P < .01 / < .001). GST levels were observed to be significantly lower in the DN group than in the control group (P < .001). The T2D and DN groups had significantly lower SOD3 levels than the control group (P > .05). SOD3 found to be positively correlated with HbA1c in the DN group (r = .712, P = .021). GST was found to be negatively correlated with FBG in the T2D group (r = -.369, P = .024). SOD3 shows a negative correlation with the insulin (r = -.426, P = .011) and HOMA-IR (r = -.393, P = .017) in the T2D group. Conclusion: SOD3 where found correlated with the insulin resistance in T2D. No correlation found between GST and NOX with the insulin resistance.
