Abstract : This study aimed to examine the role of emotional intelligence as a mediator in the relationship between problem-solving skills and perceived stress among a sample of graduate students at King Abdulaziz University. The study also aimed to examine the emotional intelligence’s predictive role in perceived psychological stress and problem-solving skills within the study sample. Additionally, the study aimed to explore the mean differences in emotional intelligence, perceived psychological stress, and problem-solving skills based on demographic variables: gender, specialization, marital status, employment status, number of children, and academic level. The researcher employed a descriptive, correlational, and comparative approach to collect the study data. The study sample consisted of 366 students, including 74 male students and 292 female graduate students at King Abdulaziz University. The researcher used the Emotional Intelligence Scale, developed by Schutte et al. (1998) and translated by Nasrat (2016), the Problem-Solving Skills Scale, developed by Heppner and Petersen (1982) and translated by the researcher, and the Perceived Stress Scale, developed by Cohen et al. (1983) and translated by Al-Rubai (2016). The study yielded several results, including a significant positive relationship between emotional intelligence and problem-solving skills and perceived psychological stress. However, no significant relationship was found between perceived psychological stress and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, significant differences were found in emotional intelligence, perceived psychological stress, and problem-solving skills within the study sample attributed to gender, academic level, marital status, and number of children. However, no differences were attributed to specialization and employment status. The results also indicated that emotional intelligence has predictive ability for perceived psychological stress and problem-solving skills within the study sample. Based on these findings, the researcher recommended the need for training and guidance programs for graduate students aimed at improving their emotional intelligence and problem-solving skills, which may contribute to reducing the levels of stress they experience during their academic and research journey.
