Abstract : This research work is aimed to utilizing observational and Regional Climate Model (RCM) data to study recent drought events in Saudi Arabia. In understanding drought characteristics over the country, the widely accepted Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is calculated using the RCM rainfall and these indices are then compared with the same obtained data from the observations. To explore regional drought events, Saudi Arabia is divided into three climatic regions, namely, the north-west, the north-east and the south-west. The patterns of SPIs calculated from the RCM rainfall are found to be similar with those obtained from the observed data for most of the drought cases. However, a considerable number of drought events are found to be out of phase for the two data sources. To overcome this difficulty, a simple regression method was used to calibrate RCM rainfall and recalculate SPI using calibrated RCM data. The calibrated RCM rainfall provides SPI matching about 98% drought cases to the observed data for the north-west and north-east regions, whilst about 68% for the south-west. The drought assessment shows that, in the recent decades, the north-west and north-east regions are more drought-prone than the south-west region of the country. Thus, the results of this work could serve as a potential drought diagnostic tool for the future climate.
