Abstract : Recently, attention has been devoted to the risk arising from naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) occasionally accumulating at significant concentrations in waste, as a consequence of oil and gas industrial processes. The wastes removed from the production equipment are probable to be contaminated by high radium concentrations. These include waste water, scales, and sludge. Sludge and scales detached from production tools can be disposed of via landspreading, a method in which wastes are spread over the soil to allow the hydrocarbon components of the wastes to degrade. This study evaluated the radiological doses and risks resulting from the disposal of oilfield wastes containing NORMs via landspreading in Saudi Arabia. Pathway probabilities and effective dose rates were estimated using RESRAD 6.5 computer code. The estimates were carried out using data on the activity concentrations of NORMs in sludge from Riyadh Refinery wastes that were previously measured and published. The disposal site characteristics used in this assessment were collected from previous studies in Riyadh. Multiple scenarios were considered in evaluating the potential risks associated with landspreading operations and the future use of the property, namely; the resident farmer, suburban resident, industrial worker, and recreationist. Depending on the land-use scenario, probable exposure pathways were evaluated for the general public. Parametric sensitivity analyses were conducted for the purpose of giving consideration to possible variability in several input parameters. According to our assessment, landspreading of the NORM wastes, (even those which are excluded from regulatory control), is considered less risky than accumulating it in a small area. For the four studied scenarios, the disposal by landspreading poses a negligible risk to most of the potential receptors considered in each case, when the concentration of Ra-226 and Th-232 in the soil is less than 0.09 Bq/g. If this method is adopted, national guidance on strategies and criteria for disposal of NORM by landspreading must be applied.
