Abstract : Consumption of oats bran and barley bran have been known to lower serum total and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level. An effect usually attributed to the soluble fibers β-glucan. The purpose of this study was testing the efficiency of β-glucan containing materials e.g. oat bran or barley bran (10%) in lowering hyperlipidemia and hypercholesterolemia induced in rats fed with cholesterol (1.0%). Twenty male albino rats were divided into four groups every groups, each consisted of five rats: (G1) normal control rats fed on basal diet, (G2) rats fed on cholesterol (1.0%). The other groups were fed the same previous cholesterol concentration (1.0%) diets supplemented with 10% oats bran (G3), or barley bran (G4), respectively. The trial period was 60 days. Blood samples were withdrawn on days 30 and 60 for biochemical blood tests. Serum total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglyceride (TG) were measured. The present study showed that 1.0% cholesterol administration causes a significant increase in lipid parameters and enzyme activities of alanin-aminotransferase (ALT) accompanied with decrease of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) compared to normal group. Also, cholesterol enriched diet increased tissue lipid peroxide (LPO) and significantly decreased glutathion-S-transferase (GST) activity and caused histological alteration compared to the negative control group. Rats of G3 and G4 showed significant decrease in lipid parameters, significantly increase in HDL-C and improved antioxidant enzyme. It was concluded that both 10% oat bran and barley bran supplementation have a protective effect against hyperlipidemia, reduced oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation as well as increment of antioxidant enzymes and improvement of histological alteration due to their high content of antioxidant β-glucan. It could be concluded that both oat bran and barley bran succeeded in lowering the lipid profile levels in hypercholesterolemic rats, but oat bran appeared more efficient than barley bran.
