The use of untreated wastewater in irrigation is prohibited in many countries and also her in Saudi Arabia such as the present study area southeast Al-Taif city in Wadi Al-Arrj. But in hiding ways, some foreign workers in some locations used raw wastewater for irrigation due to several reasons that include: (i) shortage of freshwater resources that can cover their domestic and agricultural needs, (ii) good and fast growing of these corps (iii) the costless value of wastewater and (iv) the absence of domestic authority and enforceable regulations that restrict the use of wastewater in irrigation. The aim of this research is to investigate and analyze the quality-related parameters of the wastewater used in irrigation, soil and some crops grow in this area in comparison with non polluted agricultural land. The measurements include pH, EC, SO4, PO4, NH4, NO2, NO3 for water and soil. While the essential elements and heavy metals such as Ca, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Se, Co, Al, Ag, Cd, Hg, Ba, As, Pb, Ni, Cr, Mo, B, Mn, Cu, Zn measured for all samples water, soil and selected crops They are: mint, arugula, onion, carrot and bean. Results show that wastewater contains a highly concentration of heavy metals and other elements than controlled one where the electrical conductivity is almost twice the amount in the controlled one. However, the values of some of these parameters are above the permissible limits for using wastewater in irrigation. Heavy and poising metals accumulated in the crop shoot and root and fruit especially edible parts of the studied crops more than national and international organizations allowed. |
