Abstract : A solar cell, or photovoltaic device, is a semiconductor device that consists of a P-N junction diode, which is used to generate a usable electrical energy upon illumination. Conventional inorganic solar cells were first developed by Chapin et al. at Bell Laboratories in 1954, and first commercialized a few years later for the use in space programs. Three factors affecting the future of the solar cell: efficiency, reliability, and a substantial decrease in their fabrication costs. As a result the photovoltaic industry has been growing rapidly. Unfortunately, the cost of solar electricity is still greater than the cost of electricity from the electrical grid in industrialized countries. For this reason, a new generation of solar cell devices based on less expensive and environmentally friendly materials such as those based on organic dyes and polymers are required. Fortunately, synthetic chemists can produce functional materials matching the optoelectronic properties desired. The synthesis of new functional material is of the great promises of organic electronics. In this thesis a new dye was used to fabricate a solar cell device. The used dye was prepared in chemistry department at King Khalid University. The dye was used as received without any pre-treatment. The dye was thermally evaporated as a thin solid layer (no solvent was evolved) on the Si substrate. Before using Si substrate, the SiO2 dielectric layer was chemically etched by HF for 10 seconds. Immediately a TiO2 nanoprouse thin film was deposited on a fresh etched-Si substrate by sol-gel method. The prepared Si substrate coated with TiO2 nanoporus layer was used for dye deposition. Top gold electrode was deposited on the dye surface for electrical characterization. The current density-voltage (J-V) characteristics of the solar cells were measured both in the dark and under different illumination power at 30, 40 and 50 mW/cm2.
