Abstract : The results of most studies show that smokers lose bone more rapidly and have a lower bone mass than nonsmokers. In female smokers, the risk of hip fracture is increased by 1.5-2.5 fold. The aims of the present study were to explain the relation of different aspects of body composition on smoking studying with calcium homeostasis, vitamin D, Parathyroid hormone and bone mineral density in King Fahd Medical Research Center in Center of Excellence for Research on Osteoporosis, Saudi Arabia. This study included 50 women; 25 Saudi Women smokers of molasses aged between 25-50 years. They were compared with the controls 25 healthy Saudi women of the same age group. Bone profile including serum 25-OH vitamin D, parathyroid hormone and Calcium was assayed to all women. All women had determined of bone mineral density(g/cm2) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) , BMD were determined for the anterior-posterior lumbar spine (L1-L4) and femur. The results have shown significant decrease in serum levels of calcium by (43.51%) at smoker group compared to control group. Serum parathyroid hormone levels increased by (8.84%) of smoker group . Inversely vitamin D deficiency levels were decreased by 82.9% of all women , Vitamin D insufficiency levels also decreased by (17.1 %) of all women . BMD femur decreased by 42.87% of smoker group .We Conclude from this study that molasses Tobacco smoking is in most studies found to be associated with a low bone mass and an increased risk of osteoporotic fracture. It is important to address lifestyle factors that affect bone health.
