Abstract : The outputs of the mining activities and the chemical industries in the environment have a severe impact. Pollution of heavy metals is considered as the most dangerous. In addition, heavy metals represents a real threat to all living organisms. With the starting of mineralization activity in different sites in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the development and extension of these activities in the future, there was a need to study the pollution degree in these areas. The area surrounding Mahad Ad’Dahab mine, the oldest, largest and the most important mine in KSA, was selected to be under investigation in this study. The aim of this research is to investigate and analyze the parameters of the soil and surrounding vegetation in the mine area comparing to a non polluted one. The measurements include pH, EC for the soil, whereas, the essential elements and heavy metals were measured for soil and selected plants. Elements such as Ca, Mg, Na, K, Fe, SO4, PO4, NH4, NO3, Se, Co, Al, Ag, Cd, Hg, Ba, As, Pb, Ni, Cr, Mo, B, Mn, Cu, Zn were measured. Results show that soil contains high concentrations of heavy metals comparing to the control area. Electrical conductivity is also higher in the polluted area. Moreover, the accumulation level of heavy metal in the plants under investigation is more than the allowed level by the international organizations standards.
