Abstract : On board generation of clean hydrogen is a contemporary research area for its potential application in fuel cell driven vehicles. Hydrogen can be generated from different sources, i.e. ammonia, hydrocarbons, alcohols etc., and every source have its pro and cons. In this thesis, partial oxidation of methanol is reported for a series of gold based catalyst promoted with different transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn). Catalysts were prepared by impregnation and deposition-precipitation (DP) method and characterized by N2 adsorption, XRF, XRD, H2-TPR and XPS measurements. Hydrogen and carbon dioxide were the main reaction products. Water and carbon monoxide were by-products for all the catalysts tested in this study. Only trace amount of formaldehyde was observed for some catalysts. From the investigation of gold nano-particles deposited over different oxidic supports, i.e. ZrO2, CeO2-ZrO2 and CeO2-ZrO2-TiO2, better activity and hydrogen selectivity were observed for Au/CeO2-ZeO2 catalyst. For that 91 % of methanol conversion with 75.77% of H2 selectivity and 24.40% of CO selectivity were attained at 375oC. In M/CeO2-ZrO2 catalyst series, nickel catalyst shows good result with the highest hydrogen selectivity with CO selectivity, and better methanol conversion. Au-M/CeO2-ZrO2 series catalysts exhibited better hydrogen selectivity, lower CO selectivity and higher oxygen and methanol conversion compared to the M/CeO2-ZrO2 series catalyst. Among the Au-M/CeO2-ZrO2 catalyst group, Au-Zn/CeO2-ZrO2 catalyst gives promising result for partial oxidation of methanol reaction showing 64.62% of hydrogen selectivity and 6.99% of CO selectivity at 400oC. Catalysts Cu-Zn/CeO2-ZrO2 and Au-Cu-Zn/CeO2-ZrO2 showed similar catalytic performance towards partial oxidation of methanol reaction. Both catalysts has lower CO selectivity compare to other investigated gold and transition metal promoted catalysts. Interestingly the presence of Au in Cu-Zn/CeO2-ZrO2 catalyst did not show any catalytic improvement for this reaction. 67.68% of hydrogen selectivity with 6.98% of CO selectivity at 400oC was achieved over Cu-Zn/CeO2-ZrO2 catalyst.
