Abstract : Since oral participation is one of the most observable phenomena in language classrooms, it has been noticed that students often suffer from a considerable level of anxiety in EFL classrooms. Although there are numerous studies that have been tackling this issue, special attention to learners’ perspectives would be enhancing as their point of view could be considered as a sign of the main reasons, effects and manifestations of anxiety. Therefore, this research aims to examine the main causes of speaking anxiety that Saudi EFL learners encounter in EFL classrooms, from the learners perspective, and provide some recommendations for EFL teachers in order to help their students reduce their speaking anxiety and be more involved in class discussions. The sample of this study involved 116 ELI students studying their foundation year in the university whose ages were between 18- 20 years old. To reach a good and clear understanding of this issue, a mixed- method approach was used. For gathering data, two instruments were utilized, the first one was a semi-structured interview with 10 students, and the second instrument was a questionnaire which was sent electronically to the participants via email. The qualitative research showed that the main causes of speaking anxiety that appeared during the semi- structured interview were: Teachers role in raising or reducing anxiety, lack of vocabulary, weak educational system at schools, fear of failure, and fear of negative evaluation from their peers. On the other hand, the results of the quantitative study of this research indicated that the causes of speaking anxiety which can be categorized into three main domains: causes related to the classroom atmosphere, causes related to the EFL teacher and others related to the test.
