Abstract : Context and aim: The multiple mini interviews (MMI) assess non-cognitive attributes for selection of prospective students to medical professions’ programs. However, applicants and raters come from diverse backgrounds, experiences and expectations and it is essential for the validity of the MMI that these factors do not impact on the students’ scores and their educational destiny. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the validity evidence of the MMI conducted in the Faculty of Medicine at King AbdulAziz University in the period of 2012- 2016. Methods: The MMI was series of six objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) stations with 5 questions and two raters per station. Each student was rated on 10 points scale. The mean scores, standard deviation, the reliability coefficient using Cronbach's alpha, and item-total correlation of the scores using Pearson test on each station were determined. Results: The validity evidence of the response process varied across years. The total score of Cronbach alpha across stations showed adequate reliability (0.665) in 2014, (0.698) in 2013 and (0.788) in 2016; and high reliability (0.926) in 2012 and (0.920) in 2015. However, the inter-rater reliability per station in each year revealed inconsistencies. The validity of the relationships to other variables showed correlation between MMI and leadership, research and teaching skills but no significant association between MMI scores and the secondary and preparatory results in years 2012- 2016. Conclusion: This study provides preliminary validity evidence of MMI scores with respect to the response process and relations to other variables. The results may be in support of using the MMI as an admission tool only after the application of the recommendations and the improvements plan.
