Abstract : In English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, teachers implement activities and tasks that require pair work or group work (GW) since it is believed that they have positive impact on language learning. However, there is no evidence on the effectiveness of GW in this context. Furthermore, little is known about GW and its dynamics in this context. Informed by theories of Communicative Language Teaching and Cooperative Learning, this research aims at exploring group dynamics and students’ participation patterns in EFL classes at King Abdulaziz University (KAU), as well as students’ and teachers’ perspectives on GW. This multiple-case study adopted qualitative research design through utilizing three data collection tools: classroom observations, students’ immediate recall, and interviews. The semi-structured interviews with teachers and the immediate recall data were analyzed through using NVivo 11 software. The findings showed that students demonstrated identifiable group participation patterns similar to those reported in the relevant literature, and that group dynamics had a direct impact on these patterns. It was also found that lack of participation exited, and it could be attributed to classroom environment, seating arrangements and students’ tardiness. Furthermore, students and teachers reflected positively on GW, but they also reported concerns about GW such as students’ lack of participation and social loafing. Finally, this study provided several implications to EFL teachers concerning tasks, classroom environment, students and seating arrangements. Keywords: Cooperative Learning, group work, group dynamics, group cohesion, participation, patterns.
