Abstract : Background: Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life is an essential approach for the benefit of both the infant and mother. Moreover, Breast and complementary feeding practices are considered to be a critical issue which affects infant’s growth. The aim of this study is to identify the practices of Saudi mothers regarding breast and complementary feeding as related to their infants’ growth patterns. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 136 Saudi mothers whose infants are at an age range of 4-12 months attending governmental Primary Health Care centers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Breast and complementary feeding practices were determined by questionnaire. Infant anthropometric status was assessed using z-scores for weight-for-length (WLZ), length-for-age (LAZ) and weight-for-age (WAZ). Results: The study showed statistically significant relationship at (P-value 0.013) between the income and growth rate pattern specifically with WLZ. There were no statistically significant relationship at (P-value > 0.05) between the growth pattern and mother’s age, educational level, work nature. While, the prevalence of wasting, stunting and underweight were 26 %, 18% and 26%, respectively. Moreover, 25% were exclusively breastfed. While, bottle and mixed feeding were most common practices (44.9% and 30.1%), respectively. Statistically significant relationship at (P-value 0.004 , 0.025 and 0.001) observed between both types of feeding (breast, bottle and mixed feeding) with all growth rate patterns, respectively. In addition, statistically significant relationship between (WLZ and WAZ) with amount of ( complementary feeding and if missed a meal) , respectively. However, no statistically significant relationship at (P-value > 0.05) observed between both food intake and growth rate patterns . Conclusion: This study conclude that the growth rates of the infants who received exclusive breastfeeding was lower than those who received mixed and bottle feeding. Keywords: Breastfeeding, complementary feeding, practices, growth rate.
