Subject : English Language Institute
Document Language : Arabic
Abstract : One of the major challenges EFL teachers encounter is that students are often passive and unwilling to speak in English in the classroom. Accordingly, the current thesis seeks to investigate students’ unwillingness to communicate in English. Specifically, it aims to investigate the role of context, interlocutor, and perceived communicative competence on students’ unwillingness to communicate. It also investigates the causes of students unwillingness to communicate in the EFL classroom. A total of 136 female preparatory year students at ELI at KAU participated in this study. To gain a deeper understanding of this phenomenon, a mixed methods approach was adopted. Two data collection instruments were utilized in this study: an online questionnaire with 126 participants and semi-structured interviews with 10 participants. The findings of the study revealed that students were less willing to communicate in the classroom than outside. They were also less willing to communicate with their classmates and instructor than with native and non-native speakers of English outside the classroom. Additionally, most students had low perceived communicative competence, and a significant relationship between unwillingness to communicate and perceived communicative competence was identified. As for the causes of this phenomenon, multiple causes were found, namely, fear of making mistakes, low language proficiency, fear of negative evaluation, shyness, lack of self-confidence, inefficient school education, and teacher\peers related factors. This study also provided some effective strategies such as conducting needs analysis and implementing differentiated instruction to improve this phenomenon. The study concluded by briefly stating some of the limitations and offering recommendations for future research. Keywords: Unwillingness to communicate, Saudi students, context-role, interlocutor-role, causes, EFL classroom, strategies.
