Abstract : The advancement of genetic technologies has permitted the advancement in the field of medical genetics. These developments have enabled the identification of individual traits, health status, and risk factors for various disorders. In order for such technologies to have a positive impact for both individuals and clinicians, it is imperative that participants of such tests have a basic knowledge regarding basic genetics and the implications and results of such tests, so that genetic testing doesn’t cause psychological and emotional harm to these individuals. Even though parents have a positive attitude towards genetic testing, they still lack basic genetic knowledge. The aims of this study are to improve areas of weakness in genetic services in Saudi Arabia, increase the awareness of genetic testing among parents, and avoid the psychological trauma that might happen as a result of genetic testing. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to assess basic genetic knowledge of parents whose children will participate in genetic testing, assess the parents’ perception and attitudes towards genetic testing, and examine the implication that genetic testing has on their lives at the personal and familial level. Results show that 76% of participants had good knowledge of genetics, however there is still a gap in specific areas in genetics, such as disease inheritance and basic science. When it came to genetic testing, 66% of our sample heard of genetic testing, and most of them had positive views towards it. However, there was a significant impact of genetic testing among our sample as many reported distress, anxiety and fear. They reported that their personal and familial lives will be affected significantly once the results are available. In conclusion, the development of genetic services and genetic counseling in Saudi Arabia to help educate, guide and support families when it comes to genetic disorders, genetic testing, and the implications of both.
