Abstract : Listening plays a fundamental role in language learning. Therefore, it is essential to enhance learners’ listening comprehension. The positive outcomes of metacognitive strategies in this regard have been acknowledged in a number of studies. The current study aims to investigate the effects of metacognitive strategies on Saudi adolescent EFL learners’ listening comprehension performance. The study adopted a classroom experimental design with two groups of learners (experimental and control). The experimental group (N=16) received metacognitive strategy instruction with a focus on the following metacognitive strategies: prediction/planning, selective attention, monitoring, and evaluation. The control group (N=17) did not receive any metacognitive strategies instruction and instead they were given regular English classes. Two instruments were utilized for data collection, namely two listening comprehension tests that examined learners’ listening comprehension performance before and after intervention and participant interviews to explore participants’ views on metacognitive instruction. The pertest and post-test findings show that the experimental group outperformed the control group. Furthermore, the interviews reveal that metacognitive strategies have positive impact on learners’ listening comprehension performance. The research findings provide a guide for language teachers that suggests how to teach listening skills by adopting metacognitive instruction, which involves teaching how to listen effectively, in order to improve learners’ listening comprehension performance.
