The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of almond oil on hepatic fibrosis induced by thioacetamide (TAA) in male rats. Forty male rats were used in this study and divided into four groups. Rats of the first group were served as controls. Rats of the second group were treated with TAA. Rats of the third group were treated with almond oil plus TAA. Rats of the fourth group were supplemented with almond oil. Physiological and histopathological changes were investigated after six weeks. TAA-induced liver fibrosis in rats given the control diet had the lowest body weight gain. Significant alterations of blood alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, total protein, albumin, glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol, atherogenic index, cardiac risk ratio, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid, creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase, and liver glutathione, superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde and catalase were observed in TAA treated rats. Histopathologically, the liver and kidney sections from TAA treated rats showed severe alterations. Administration of almond oil before TAA exposure to rat can prevent severe changes of physiological parameters and histopathological features. Moreover, the present study suggests that the protective effects of almond oil attributed to its antioxidant activity. |
