Abstract : This study aimed to evaluate the infestation of Argas persicus on the health and economic productivity of Balady chicken at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A survey was conducted on five random poultry farms of Balady chicken during the four seasons of the year. Blood samples were collected from infested and uninfested birds to estimate the effect of infestation on the main blood variables: Red blood cells (RBC), White blood cells (WBC), Hematocrit (Hct), and Hemoglobin (HGB), as well as the bodyweight (BW) during four weeks of infestation in the lab. To evaluate the effect of A. persicus infestation on the eggs' quality, two samples of eggs from infested and uninfested farms were collected and then investigated for internal and external qualities. An investigation of acaricidal activity was performed using two samples of Mentha longifolia and Rosmarinus officinalis L. oil extracts against adult females of A. persicus in the lab. The results revealed that four out of five poultry farms were infested with A. persicus. The highest infestation rate with ticks in the poultry farms was in the summer, then followed by spring and fall and was the least in winter. The results of blood investigation and bodyweight of infested birds showed a significant decline (P<0.05) in HCT, RBC, WBC, HGB, and BW by 49%, 62%, 48%, 55%, 31% respectively. The internal and external qualities of eggs were affected by tick infestation (P<0.05). However, some egg quality parameters were not affected (P<0.05) by the tick infestation compared to the control group. The result of acaricidal test showed high toxicity with a significant difference (P<0.05) of using the oil extracts against A. persicus compared to the control groups. A gradual increase in the mortality rate of female ticks was recorded. The mortality rate was synchronized with oil concentration and time post-treatment. Although both oil extracts were highly toxic against the ticks, no significant difference (P<0.05) was recorded between them in the lab. The study concluded that A. persicus infestation affected the health of Balady chicken, and it had also a negative effect on the economic production of meat and eggs. The acaricidal activity of oil extracts from local herbs showed great results against A. persicus which might be used as an effective and safe alternative to chemical pesticides.
