Abstract : Background: Celiac disease (CD) is an auto-immune enteropathy affecting the small intestine, in which the ingestion of gluten leads to the secretion of autoantibodies in the blood, causing villous atrophy of the intestinal wall. A limited number of studies exist on dental maturity with various oral health parameters of children with CD. Objective: The aim was to assess the oral health condition and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in children with CD. Materials and methods: A control-cross-sectional study, which included 104 children with CD and 104 healthy controls aged 6 to 14 years in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. They were recruited from the pediatric celiac clinic at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH) to the pediatric dental clinic at King Abdulaziz University Dental Hospital (KAUDH). After obtaining ethical approval and parental consent, the participants completed parent and OHRQoL questionnaires, then an oral examination was followed in their children. Results: Children with CD had a higher prevalence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis, dental enamel defects, and delay in dental maturity than healthy controls. OHRQoL of children with CD was found to be inferior to that of healthy controls. Multivariate analysis showed that CD was a significant predictor of recurrent aphthous stomatitis, dental enamel defects, and dental maturity. However, no significant difference in malocclusion was found between children with CD and healthy controls. Conclusion: Statistically significant oral findings observed in children with CD were recurrent aphthous stomatitis, dental enamel defects, delay in dental maturity, these were found to be risk indicators to CD based on multivariate analysis. The pediatric dentist could be the first to diagnose CD; thus, it is essential to be familiar with different oral findings in children with CD.
