Abstract : Aim: the purpose of this study is to measure the impact of orthognathic surgery on the quality of life in Saudi patients. Materials and methods: patients who were planned to undergo orthognathic surgery were enrolled in the study, demographic data, and their desires to improve their appearance by doing the surgery were registered. They were also asked to complete the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). In addition, their weight was recorded. Data were recorded at three times; 2 weeks preoperatively (T1) 2 weeks after the surgery (T2) and 3 months postoperatively (T3). Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Bonferroni post hoc test were conducted to evaluate the differences in mean weight, quality of life scores over time. The level of significance was set to P0.05. Results and discussion: Twenty-two patients participated in the study. The main desire to do the surgery was to improve the facial appearance. There was no significant difference between OQLQ scores (p= 0.102) between T1 and T2. However, there were significant difference between T2 and T3 (p<0.05). This reflects a significant improvement in the Quality of life of the patients after the surgery. There wase high anxiety before the surgery, and it did improve 3 months after the surgery. The mean weight changed significantly between the three-time point (P< 0.05), the weight decreased by an average of 5.454 kg (p<0.05) from T1 to T2, and then increased by an average of 2.545 kg (p <0.05) from T2 to T3. This significant weight loss may affect the healing and therefore, we recommend enrollment of dietary consultation in the orthognathic surgery team. Conclusion: The study showed that quality of life and anxiety level were significantly improved after 3 months of the surgery. The present study also revealed that orthognathic surgery causes weight loss of the patients due to the restriction of the diet postoperatively. However, they tend to regain their weight after few months. Patients should be informed that significant changes are expected after three months.
