Abstract : In this thesis, abrupt regime change of climate extremes were investigated based on daily observational data in different climatic regions over Saudi Arabia during 1978-2021. The climate extreme indices are calculated using two methods: i) fixed thresholds and ii) the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI) recommended tool RClimDex. For the analysis of the temperature and rainfall extremes, the five climatic regions (northern, coastal, interior, highland, and southern) in Saudi Arabia are taken into consideration. Among the 27 RClimDex climate extreme indices, 23 are considered based on climatic characteristics of Saudi Arabia and four of them are analyzed in detail. Irrespective of analysis methods, the warming of the climate in Saudi Arabia is unequivocal in recent decades and is evidence of climate change. Regardless of region and season, warm days (TX90p) are increasing, and cold nights (TN10p) are decreasing. The occurrence of warm days is observed in all seasons and regions with an increasing trend, the highest increase observed in highland and interior regions. Its occurrence frequency is high in autumn followed by winter. The occurrence of cold nights has a decreasing trend and the decreasing rate is higher in highland and northern regions. Its occurrence is mostly observed in the winter, spring, and autumn seasons. The frequency of wet days and very wet days is increasing in northern and southern regions with high probability of flash flood events, while it is decreasing in interior and highland regions which is alarming for high probability for drought events. They are almost keeping flat in the coastal region. The wet season rainfall is dominant in northern, coastal, and interior regions while dry season rainfall is observed in highland and southern regions. This regional and seasonal information about climate extreme variations in Saudi Arabia are valuable for decision-makers and planners of the country. This document can be used for the calibration of the same indices to be obtained from the climate models simulations, which in turn will be valuable for extremes projection over the country.
