This study is concerned with the differences and diversity of translation of linguistic terms into Arabic, resulting in a lack of understanding and comprehension of the concepts and definitions of terms. From this springboard, the study is intended to find out how the mechanism is effective in using one of the translation tools – that is, etymology – to minimize the differences in drafting the Arabic counterpart concept. The study has employed the following approaches: the descriptive analysis approach – i.e. the approach used to describe the offspring of the study such as lexicons, glossaries, translated books and the like. The contrastive analysis approach is also used to investigate the structure of terms, considering transferring mechanism and the concepts of Arabic counterparts, alongside definitions and explanations.
By doing so, the study is intended to reveal the impact of an etymological dimension of the term in the source language and derive benefit in translating its counterpart in Arabic language (i.e., target language) and its concept relying upon explanations in the Arabic linguistic lexicons and comparing it with what mentioned in the English etymological lexicons. The Study has employed the following approaches: the descriptive analysis approach – i.e., the approached used to describe the offspring of the study such as lexicons, glossaries, translated books and the like. The contrastive analysis approach is also used to investigate the structure of terms in light of transferring mechanism and the concepts of Arabic counterpart, together with definitions and explanations.
This study is divided into four chapters, an introduction and prelude covering the topic of language and thought from the viewpoint of Prototype Theory alongside with an applied study.
Chapter I provide a theoretical introduction to linguistic studies between heritage and Hadith
Chapter II focuses on the meaning of the term and its function through three topics.
Chapter III is concerned with etymology and respective analyses adopted by the study to select the equivalent counterpart of the term. It is also intended to shed light on the effect of etymology in translation as well as contrastive analysis of the term structure.
Chapter IV is concerned with the relationship between the etymology of the translated terms through the acoustic term in the Arabic heritage lesson as well as through the Western Phonology Theory as indicated below.
-Introduction to the relationship between the linguistic sense of the contrastive formula and the concept of the term through models.
-Definition of the historical linguistic terms in the linguistic lexicons
-Definition of the Western linguistic terms in linguistic lexicons
-The bases derived from the role of etymology in translating the linguistic term
The Following are among the most significant findings concluded by the study. There are relations that would tie the words with definitions (senses) through translation by using the etymology as follows: 1. Etymology reserving its meaning; 2. Etymology reserving part of the meaning; 3. New senses (meanings) having no relation to the etymology; 4. Unconfirmed etymology; 5. Obscure Etymology; 6. Obsolete Etymology.
The study is concluded with several recommendations as follows:
- To make benefit of foreign studies in the field of lexicology, such as limiting the blended structure that can be confined to a large extent, as it is possible to list sculptures and know their traces.
- To probably derive benefit out of the ‘Dialectical Structure’ as dubbed by the French Scholar Pierre Giroud, by applying so to classical Arabic proverbs, and colloquial proverbs, to know their origins and etymology by phonetic, historical, and geographical methods.
- To set up a historical, etymological, glossary of terms in each discipline of knowledge.
