Abstract : Demotivation plays a key role in students' failure and lack of success, so it is necessary to understand what teaching practices lead to student frustration and the extent to which they affect motivation towards learning English. Therefore, this qualitative study aims to explore teaching practices that demotivate students: such as teachers’ behaviors, teaching methods, personality traits, and linguistic competencies of English language teachers. To achieve this goal, semi-structured interviews were conducted with (20) female high school students in a government school in Medina, a city in the Western Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The purpose of the study is to understand secondary school students’ perceptions regarding teaching practices that discourage them to learn English. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results indicated that the frustrating teaching practices of secondary school students consist of nine aspects: (a) teacher-centered teaching (b) excessive use of the Arabic language (c) unsatisfactory linguistic competence and knowledge of teachers (d) lack of teacher motivation (e) lack of feedback For the learner (f) Discriminatory practices among students (g) Teachers’ embarrassment of students (h) Moody teachers (i) Excessive strictness. The results of the study provide evidence for policy makers and EFL teachers and suggest that providing more effective communication in EFL classrooms can enhance students' confidence and, in turn, their motivation. Besides, EFL teachers are advised to monitor their behaviors such as motivation and discriminatory practices among students as they are related to their students' motivations. key words: Discouragement, teaching methods, personal qualities, aptitude, English classes
