Abstract : Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have recently been shown to be suitable candidates for several gas and water adsorption applications. Due to high stability and modular properties, MOFs isolated based on highly connected rare earth (RE) metal clusters showed potential applications in several areas. The focus of this thesis is to explore novel MOFs containing Rare-Earth metals (RE) to continue research in this field and to study these materials for water adsorption applications using different techniques in characterizations. This thesis starts by introducing MOFs, their compositions, and application in water adsorption. The study discloses the synthesis of three fcu-MOFs by a solvothermal method using 2-fluorobenzoic acid (FBA) as a modulator. A novel fcu-MOF was obtained by the combination of a 2-connected 9-Fluorenone-2,7-dicarboxylic acid ligand and RE metal ions to form Tb-FDC-MOF and Y-FDC-MOF. Moreover, two fcu-MOFs were synthesized using 4-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl) benzoic acid and the fluorine substituted ligand, 2,3-fluoro-4--(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)benzoic acid to study the effects of substitution on water adsorption performance. Those MOFs are characterized using different techniques such as PXRD, IR, TGA, and water adsorption. Additionally, a highly connected new Er-sky-MOF was synthesized via a combination of a 3-connected ligand (4,4′,4′′-(1H-imidazole-2,4,5-triyl)tribenzoic acid) with Erbium metal ions. Er-sky-MOF shows a high surface area which reaches 2500 m2/g with a pore volume of 1 cm3/g.
